The Roman RoadIf yesterday’s message left you wanting to close the door of sin in your life— that’s really good.  If it left you wanting to put out the welcome mat for God’s presence at the door of your heart— that’s great.  If it left you aching to share what Jesus did on the cross with someone you know— that’s tremendous.

Here’s a tool called the “Roman Road” to help you do that. It’s just a road map, really, through the pages of Romans that can keep you focused as you talk through the amazing gift of salvation with someone who needs to hear it.  Print it out and keep it handy, jot it down in the back of your Bible, put it in your smartphone, or memorize it completely.  But, whatever you do, be prepared to testify about how this journey has changed your life and get ready to see it transform someone else’s.

  • Romans 3:23
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
  • Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
  • Romans 10:9-10
That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

1 John 5 so that you may know jpg“Because it was Jesus who came to us from eternity, to prepare us for eternity and He is our greatest insight into discovering how to embrace eternity.” – Pastor Tom Mullins, Christ Fellowship

A dear friend of mine in college loved to work out and loved to play football.  I remember eating lunch with Jason one afternoon as he said, “I just want to test my body, to see how strong I get, to see how much I can take.”

Unfortunately, neither he, nor the two girls he was traveling with were strong enough to take the impact of a head on collision with a semi truck.  The loss of those three precious lives devastated all of us at Hardin-Simmons that year.

All of us have our limits, and life has an expiration date.

It is absolutely essential that, in the midst of our journey through life, we prepare ourselves for eternity by embracing Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

“And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.  He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.  I write these things to you who believe in the Name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”  — 1 John 5:11-13

Do you know that you have eternal life?  It doesn’t have to be a mystery.

I encourage you click on the Podcast link and take a few minutes to listen to “Embrace Eternity,” our message from yesterday.  It could be the best investment you ever make into eternity.

You can also find a great article on embracing eternity at the EFC website.

May the grace of God fill your life as you discover peace with Him through the cross of Jesus Christ.

They are precious in His sight!

They are precious in His sight!

My decision to become a follower of Jesus has a rather peculiar beginning.

For starters, I believe I was called to be a minister of the gospel even before I submitted my heart to become a Christian.  Through the kindness of friends and effectiveness of bus ministries, I gained exposure to the message of Jesus at an early age.  I was inspired to share this good news and bring life to those who were broken even before I had personally received it.

The second peculiarity follows close behind the first– the fact that I gave my life to Jesus while on a youth group mission trip in Mexico.  It was on foreign soil after a strenuous day of construction projects and leading children in Vacation Bible School that I became overwhelmed by the realization that although I knew Jesus as a “nice guy,” I had never received Him as my personal Lord and Savior.  I went to Mexico to tell others about the cross and, by the grace of God, I discovered it for myself.

Maybe those strange beginnings are the reason that a passion for Missions burns deep in my heart.  I believe Jesus is the hope of all mankind and that it is the birthright of every follower of Christ to share the love of God in a culture foreign to their own.

And so we reach the title of today’s blog.  I felt like a kid in a candy store as we had the privilege of hosting a brother of Persian descent in church yesterday.  His words kept me on the edge of my seat, and the beautiful story of his salvation placed yet another log on the Missions fire.

What is it about Jesus that makes your heart come alive?  What is the fire that burns in your heart?  I encourage you to let the breath of the Holy Spirit fan the flame that burns inside of you.  Let it burn until even those around you are warmed by the fire of God’s call on your life!

For those of you who would like to know more about how you can pray for the people and nation of Iran, I have included a bonus post, “My Prayer For Iran” that I encourage you to check out.

On a personal note, I ask you to please pray for my 12 year old son, Keegan, and I as we take a mission trip together in November to Eastern Europe.  Pray that this exposure to the mission field will fan the flame God has placed in his young heart.

OK, time for a pastoral confession, sometimes I even surprise myself with what I say on Sunday morning.  Yesterday’s message had one of those surprising moments.

I planned to use the drowning illustration to conclude the sermon, but as I was setting the illustration of being swept out to sea by the hidden rip current of sin, the most amazing image entered my mind.  I could see a lamb swimming by.

It is such an odd image.  A lamb doesn’t belong in the ocean.  In fact, a lamb would seem to be more vulnerable than me or you 300 yards off shore.  But it is that out of place feeling that makes the illustration work.

A lamb is the most unlikely life jacket in the world, but if you were drowning in the ocean you would grab hold of anything.

So what do we do when we are drowning in depression, in brokenness, in rage, in regret, in fear, or in shame?  How long can we tread water alone?

If you can relate to the feeling of drowning in this world, I want you to see that the Lamb is with in reach.  You can grab hold of Him for salvation.

If I remember correctly, The Lamb can even walk on water!  Let Him pull you to a safe place today.
